Dear <Senator King/ Senator Collins/ Congresswoman Pingree/ Congressman Golden>,
I’m writing today to thank you for investing in Maine’s children and ensuring access to food during the summer when school is out, which is often the hungriest time for kids who rely on school meals. The creation of a permanent, nationwide Summer EBT program and the flexibility of grab and go summer meals have the potential to lower food insecurity in many Maine households.
However, the method of paying for Summer EBT by reducing other benefits like SNAP Emergency Allotments and Summer Pandemic EBT means that many of those same households could see a reduction in their grocery benefits, not an increase. This will result in continued food insecurity for children and families during a time of skyrocketing costs for basic needs like heat, housing, medicine, and food.
There is still much work to do. Please prioritize critical investments to expand SNAP and child nutrition programs in the Farm Bill and the Child Nutrition Reauthorization this year. Maine children and families are counting on you.
Thank you,
